The Recruiting Sergeant is an award-winning traditional pub and restaurant with rooms situated in the village of Horstead. Our menus feature a variety of dishes showcasing the adventurous use of outstanding ingredients by our team of chefs led by Matthew Colchester. Fresh fish and seafood is a speciality and a passion of ours, and we have also put our stamp on classic British pub grub. On Sundays, our traditional roasts are a popular choice. The bar is well stocked with regularly changing real ales and cutting-edge lagers, while a large range of carefully selected wines are served by the glass or bottle. New for 2021, you can also treat yourself to a cocktail from a bespoke menu crafted for us by Edmunds.
We are a dog-friendly pub and welcome well-behaved dogs on leads in the bar or garden, but they are not permitted in the restaurant. Dogs are also welcome in some of our guest bedrooms. Please mention when booking if you are bringing a dog so that an appropriate table or room may be allocated.
If dining in the bar with your dog we ask that owners be sensitive to other guests. If a dog needs food or water please take them outside where water bowls are provided.
Pub open every day from 10.30am (11.00am Sunday). Food Served: Monday to Saturday 12.00pm – 8.30pm, Sunday 12.00pm – 8.00pm

in the last weekMagnificent Sunday Roast! The quality, size and taste of our roast chicken and roast beef was excellent. Promptly served without a long wait for its arrival. All the staff we came across were friendly, polite and ready to please. We will spread the word!

2 weeks agoGreat food for a hungry family. The children’s portions were superb. I chose a starter as I knew there would be leftovers. I’m glad I did as it was delicious (Dover Sole and prawns in butter accompanied by samphire 👌🏻). Triple cooked chips unfortunately didn’t hit the mark but everything else was great. A lovely location with extra seating outside

3 weeks agoWe visited the restaurant for lunch after a morning out on a boat on the river. Without any doubt the best meal we have had in a very long time. The standard of cooking, presentation, and service was incredibly high. The portion sizes were great value for money and sitting in the courtyard garden on a sunny day was just perfect. There is nothing I could find fault with at this gem.

a month agoExcellent pub food. The staff were very attentive and excellent with our requirements for our daughter with allergies. The food itself was priced well and of very good quality. Lovely sunny garden. We went twice in a three day trip to Norfolk.

2 months agoThere's a reason that this place is our favourite place to dine in Norfolk. Never disappointed with the Food, ambience and service. It's a delight. Proportion and presentation absolutely on point as it is every single time. The Rising Sun down the road is equally as good. Make sure you stop by and try the Sunday lunch too. We were lucky enough to meet one of the owners tonight going round tables to make sure everything is on point. Thanks again for your continued excellence and look forward to dining with you again very soon, until then, thanks again!!!!
