Homey local pub with an expansive backyard serving elevated comfort fare & creative cocktails.

The Black Horse has stood for over 300 years in the popular residential area of the Golden Triangle in Norwich. The beautiful red brick public house is a 5 minutes walk from the Roman Catholic Cathedral and 10 minutes from Upper St Giles.

It was built in 1714 and has traded under the name The Black Horse ever since.

The sprawling pub garden – now decorated with festoon lights above lots of tables, a patio area and outside sofas – was used as a bowling green during the Victorian and Edwardian era. Spot the old photographs and the moustached bowlers hanging in the pub!

In late 2015, owner and operator Rose Hanison did major renovation work and breathed much needed love and care back into the building.

As per all listings on Dog Friendly Norfolk, we accept well behaved dogs.

Super busy when we visited on a Thursday night but luckily got the last free table - definitely a good idea to book in advance. The pub is super cosy with a really relaxed vibe. We both had burgers and loaded fries - delicious! Service was friendly and our little dog was made to feel very welcome, he even got his own plate of treats!

Absolutely gorgeous roast dinner today. We arrived a little early but waited in the warm at our table. The atmosphere was really friendly (the staff are all lovely) and the food was wonderfully fresh and delicious! The free doggy roast dinner was a hit with my dog Evie. We’re looking forward to going back soon.

The staff were lovely and were genuinely attentive without being over bearing. The beers were well kept as well. On the day of our visit it was reasonably busy as well with a very good atmosphere. As we felt hungry we decided to order food. Looked at the menu it looked.good if a tad expensive. £7.50 for fries with bacon, mozzarella and cheddar cheese. £5 for fries and mozzarella cheese. Which we decided to go for as we only wanted a light bite. I have to say the fries were very nice and well cooked. It would have been nice to have had a few more for the price. However, given the current financial crisis all pubs etc are facing I can understand why. Would visit again as it was the staff who made the experience a good one and are a credit to The Black Horse pub.

Great pub, our vegetarian friends impressed too, strangely, they had vegetarian options at the start of the mains, followed by meat and fish options. Small menu, but straters are like small meals, so had 2 of them, which made good size meal and same price as a main. We all enjoyed the food. Prices are very decent, cosy atmosphere. Glad they welcome dogs too. Loads of covered and heated seating outside too

Lovely place with good food and a very friendly staff. The brownkes witch ice cream are to be killed for. The waiting staff going out of their way to make sure you're happy. It was my first visit but I'll surely come again.
