Homey local pub with an expansive backyard serving elevated comfort fare & creative cocktails.

The Black Horse has stood for over 300 years in the popular residential area of the Golden Triangle in Norwich. The beautiful red brick public house is a 5 minutes walk from the Roman Catholic Cathedral and 10 minutes from Upper St Giles.

It was built in 1714 and has traded under the name The Black Horse ever since.

The sprawling pub garden – now decorated with festoon lights above lots of tables, a patio area and outside sofas – was used as a bowling green during the Victorian and Edwardian era. Spot the old photographs and the moustached bowlers hanging in the pub!

In late 2015, owner and operator Rose Hanison did major renovation work and breathed much needed love and care back into the building.

As per all listings on Dog Friendly Norfolk, we accept well behaved dogs.

My search for the best place in Norwich for a Sunday Roast took me to the Black Horse on Earlham Road. Booking is essential as it was very busy. There are multi levels and some of the tables are high with high chairs (was forewarned of this on booking) but the chairs were comfy. Service was very good, quick bringing our drinks and we didn't have a long wait for food. We were asked if there were any allergies when taking our order. We had the All Meats Roast. Children's size was also available and even one for your dog too. Dogs were very welcome. The food was hot, Yorkshire pud was massive. The beef was lovely, chicken nice, pork just melted. What I really liked is that the roast potatoes and veg didn't taste like they'd been sat under a heat lamp for hours. I asked for extra gravy and it was promptly brought to the table. My only negative was the big dollop of Horseradish on the side of the plate. I'm not a fan and unfortunately I couldn't eat the things it was put on top of, so having it in a dish on the table would have been preferable. Aside from that we all thoroughly enjoyed our Roast and would return.

Lovely atmosphere. Extremely busy but we'll organised. Dog friendly. Excellent roast. I enjoyed the small pumpkin roast. They even do dog roasts so they don't miss out. Staff very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend the place. Also their gold card is a good deal. We got one and it can be quite a saving on your bill plus other good deals. You need to book to be sure you can be assured of a table due to the fact of how busy the place is.

Arrived at about 2:30pm for a Sunday Roast, originally booked a table over the phone to sit in the bar however was given the option to sit outside if we wanted as it was a nice day, could take any table and there is a secondary station outside where a member of staff takes orders. Really friendly and informative staff alongside an amazing roast dinner. Couldn't fault it in any way, the portions were massive! The stuffing was particularly good, one of my favourites which you don't always see on a roast so that was a bonus! Will be back again..

Had a lovely time here! Tried a prawn starter which was delicious. I had a mushroom burger which was great too. Good parking onsite 😋Service and all staff were kind and food came in good time. Photos I took aren't the best quality.

We had a lovely meal here on a Wednesday evening. The outdoor area is nice and big, set back from the road and there is good tree coverage to stop you getting sunburnt in the summer. There is a big dedicated car park with a bike rack which is also very convenient. Food was good, service was excellent and the atmosphere was very relaxed. The barman recommended the starters and we would definitely agree they were pretty good, especially the courgette
